About VOCAL

VISION-Shaping the future by validating, honouring and empowering victims of crime.

MISSION- Empowering victims of crime by providing trauma informed care and support, practical assistance and community education to ensure that the needs of crime victims are adequately addressed.

The Victims of Crime Assistance League (VOCAL) is a specialist, independent, trauma-informed service supporting victims of crime across the Hunter region of NSW.

We provide person-centred advocacy, practical assistance, justice navigation, and systemic reform advocacy for people impacted by domestic and family violence, sexual violence, child sexual abuse, violent crime, and other serious offences.

VOCAL is entering an important phase of growth and strategic development. As we strengthen our service model, partnerships and long-term sustainability, we are seeking committed and skilled individuals to join our voluntary Board.

The Opportunity

We are inviting Expressions of Interest from individuals who:

Have the capacity to make a meaningful and consistent contribution
Are committed to ethical governance and community impact
Align with trauma-informed, victim-centred values
Bring strategic expertise that strengthens organisational sustainability
This is a volunteer governance role with significant opportunity to contribute to measurable social impact across the Hunter.

Skills and Expertise Sought

We are particularly seeking Board members with demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:

Lived Experience

VOCAL strongly values lived experience and recognises the unique insight, empathy and perspective it brings to governance. We actively encourage applications from people with lived experience of being a victim-survivor of crime.

Grant Writing & Philanthropic Funding

Preparing competitive grant applications (government and philanthropic)
Liaising with philanthropic foundations and funding bodies
Building funding strategies and diversified revenue streams
Understanding NGO compliance and funding acquittals
Event Management & Community Engagement (NGO Sector)

Designing and delivering fundraising and awareness events
Membership growth strategies
Corporate and community partnership development
Community engagement campaigns aligned with social impact
Fundraising strategy development
Research & Government Submissions

Policy analysis and evidence synthesis
Drafting submissions to Local, State and Federal Government
Legislative and regulatory review processes
Contributing to law reform and systemic advocacy initiatives
Board Responsibilities

Board members are expected to:

Attend regular Board meetings (approximately bi-monthly)
Participate in strategic planning and governance oversight
Contribute expertise to sub-committees or working groups as relevant
Support fundraising and stakeholder engagement initiatives
Uphold the organisation’s mission, values and compliance obligations
Act in accordance with ACNC governance standards and director duties
Time Commitment

This role requires:

Preparation and attendance at scheduled Board meetings
Availability for occasional strategic workshops or events
Capacity to contribute between meetings in areas of expertise
We are particularly seeking individuals who have the time to make a genuine and active contribution.
