Job Description

  • We’re looking for several Peer Workers to join ACON’s Check OUT clinic, a peer led sexual health and cervical screening service for LGBTQ+ women, trans men and gender diverse people.
  • This is a peer worker role, focused on creating a safe, respectful and affirming experience for clients from the moment they arrive.
  • You’ll work alongside nurses and GPs to support client intake, health education, trauma informed support and care navigation. This is not a clinical role.

What’s Check OUT you say?

Check OUT is ACON’s LGBTQ+ inclusive sexual health and cervical screening clinic, delivered in partnership with Family Planning Australia.

The clinic is designed for people who:

  • Are overdue or have never screened.
  • Have experienced stigma or trauma in healthcare.
  • Prefer peer led, community based services.

The service provides free sexual health testing and cervical screening in a setting that centres dignity, choice and safety.

Ok, so what’s the role?

As a Peer Worker, Testing Services, you will be the first point of contact for clients attending the clinic. You will:

  • Welcome and support clients using inclusive, affirming and peer led approaches.
  • Support intake and consent processes, including screening history and care preferences.
  • Provide clear, accessible health education about cervical screening, HPV, self collection, and STI testing.
  • Use a parts and practices approach to support appropriate screening pathways (without making clinical decisions).
  • Communicate trauma informed care preferences to clinicians to support safe, respectful care.
  • Document intake and discussions in an electronic medical record.
  • Provide emotional support and aftercare check ins, including referrals to clinicians or other ACON services.
  • Work closely with clinicians and ACON staff to support smooth clinic flow.
  • Participate in training, supervision and clinic operations, including set up and pack down.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has lived experience of, or strong connection to, LGBTQ+ women, trans men and gender diverse communities.
  • Understands the diverse health experiences of LGBTQ+ people.
Can provide peer based, trauma informed and non judgemental support.
  • Is comfortable talking about sexual health, screening and body diversity using inclusive language.
  • Has strong communication skills and enjoys working with people.
  • Can work within a defined scope of practice and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Is available to work evenings and occasional weekends.

Desirable (but not required):

  • Experience in peer work, health promotion, community services or sexual health.
  • Training or experience in trauma informed care.
  • Knowledge of cervical screening, STI testing or cancer prevention (or willingness to learn).
  • Experience working with trans and gender diverse people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, or people with disability.

What else can we tell you?

  • Contract: Casual.
  • Location, hours and pay: ACON’s Gadigal (Surry Hills) office, starting at $50.1375 casual hourly rate (inc loading).
  • Ongoing training, supervision and development.
