Building Cultural Safety in Times of Change (part 2)
It’s been a over a month since 18 May when we held a group conversation within the NSW social service sector, regarding building cultural safety for First Nations staff and communities in workplace settings.
The themes and concerns that were raised in May remain as important as ever, in the lead up to the First Nations Voice to Parliament referendum later this year.
Please join us as we continue the conversation.

Who should attend?
This session is for workers and leaders within the NSW social service sector who would like to contribute (within an open and safe environment) to a conversation around building cultural humility and cultural safety within the workplace, especially in times of change.
What we aim to discuss
In break-out rooms, and observing a trauma-informed strengths-based approach, we will discuss-
- What progress are we making in our organisations, and what barriers still exist?
- What commitments can we make for action, individually and with our organisation, over the next 2 months?
Recommended reading (pre-event)
To get us all on a similar starting point, here are resources that we recommend as pre-event reading.
- Gari Yala, Speak the Truth: Centering the Work Experiences of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Australians 2020
- Ngarala Duba Non-Government Organisations Roundtable Report (especially panel discussions and recommendations)
A shorter read is the 'Culturally Informed, Trauma Integrated Healing Approach' (CITIHA) Framework provided on the We Al-li website
More specific trauma-informed training Responding to Trauma is coming up at Absec in July and October.
Resources from 18 May 2023 'Building Cultural Safety in Times of Change' discussion
Note
To maintain a safe and trusting environment, this session will not be recorded. Thank you.
