Every year, NCOSS surveys people living in poverty in NSW to understand whether a basic standard of living is truly affordable. This year, we partnered with 89 Degrees East to look beyond the data and understand the day-to-day reality of poverty and the toll it takes on individuals, families and communities.

The Affordability Crisis
Our first data snapshot reveals the new face of poverty: an increase in households experiencing poverty for the first time. Since our 2023 cost of living research, the compounding cost of living has forced a growing number of people into housing insecurity, while forcing others to skip meals and delay essential healthcare.
