The Challenge

Safe, stable and affordable housing is a human right and the foundation for a healthy life. This is out of reach for too many people in NSW amidst a housing crisis and growing homelessness. Underinvestment in social and affordable housing, undersupply of new housing, and weaknesses in renter protections, compound to create immense challenges for those on low incomes.

The Facts

  • Over two-thirds of low-income households are living in housing stress, with homelessness rising compared to 2023.
  • There are over 66,000 households on the social housing waitlist. Wait times vary across the state, from 5 months (in the Central Coast) to more than 5 years (in the North Coast).
  • In 2025, there were 2,192 people sleeping rough across the state – an 8% increase from 2024.
  • The past 5 years, the median rent in NSW has increased by 38%.
  • More data is available on the Homelessness NSW factsheet.
