The Challenge
Domestic and family violence remains a serious issue in NSW and is a leading driver of homelessness. Service providers are at breaking point, unable to meet rising demand. Women and children, particularly from First Nations and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, face higher risks, compounded by housing and legal access challenges.
The Facts
- 1 in 4 Australian women are impacted by domestic and family violence in their lifetime.
- NSW had the highest rate in Australia of gendered murders in 2024.
- The number of domestic violence related assaults recorded by NSW Police has risen by 18% between 2020 and 2025.
- 1 in 3 Australian men admit to using intimate-partner violence.
- Nearly 9,120 women in Australia become homeless each year due to domestic and family violence. In NSW, they make up almost half of all specialist homelessness service clients.
- More Domestic and Family Violence statistics can be found on the BOCSAR and DVNSW websites.
