Daniel Goleman in Emotional Intelligence: How Competent Are You? notes it is not a fixed trait but is made up of a range of competencies or skills. In research into the behaviour of outstanding leaders, 12 skills were identified that fall within four domains: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Each of these skills can be learnt and developed.
